What is Transpersonal Counselling?

Transpersonal Counselling is a school of psychology that incorporates the spiritual aspects of the human experience, thus integrating spiritual experience with modern psychological theory.

It approaches, what one may perceive as an obstacle, a negative experience, a crisis or physical impediment, as a greater context of human growth or potential. 

It assists us in gaining wisdom and insight into ourselves, our purpose and our connection with everything around us, looking beyond our ego or personal self to a greater consciousness.

 Transpersonal Counselling acknowledges that there is a diverse range of states in which we can connect with ourselves and our consciousness and the transpersonal model allows us to gain greater understanding and awareness through these different states and to gather wisdom and resources to assist us in connecting to our potential and our life journey. 

The different states of consciousness may include; dreams, belief systems, visualisation, meditation, exercise, depression and spiritual emergence, which is generally perceived as mental illness, to name just a few.

There are several methods that are used in Transpersonal Counselling. It is client-centred, working with the belief that we hold our own, inherent wisdom within us and that we are capable of moving through our issues and the role of the therapist is therefore to support and hold space through this movement forward... creating a genuine and respected therapeutic connection.

 

Other methods include:

'Induction Techniques:' working within deeply relaxed states.

'Focusing:' working at reconnecting with one’s own innate wisdom and healing ability.

'Gestalt Therapy:' working with what is being thought, felt and done in the present moment, working in consultation with ones 'other.'

It is through these methods that one gains powerful insights into patterns and coping mechanisms and what triggers their behaviour and in doing so, allows one to release, create shifts, and connect back to their authentic being.
