Cupping is one of the oldest methods of TCM. It helps to remove stagnation and toxins, and improve blood circulation throughout the body in order to speed up healing. It is similar to a deep tissue massage.
How do the cups suction to my body?
A flammable substance, such as alcohol, is placed in the cup and set on fire, burning a substance inside the cup removes all oxygen, which creates a vacuum. As the fire stops and the air cools inside the cup, the open-end is quickly placed on your skin.
Cups are often placed on the back, neck and shoulders or at the site of pain. Drawing up your skin causes it to rise and redden as blood vessels expand, this opens up the skins pores, which helps to stimulate the flow of blood, break up obstructions and create an avenue for toxins to be drawn out of the body and promote healing of a variety of medical conditions. Depending on the condition, the cups are left on the skin generally for 5-10 minutes.
Cupping may cause temporary bruising and soreness and may take a few days to disappear.
