What is Gua Sha?
Gua Sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth massage tool to improve your circulation. Massage oil is applied to your skin, and then the tool is repeatedly used to scrape your skin in a downward motion to stimulate microcirculation of the soft tissue, which increases blood flow.
Gua Sha is generally performed on the back, neck, arms, and legs. A gentle version of it is even used on the face as a facial technique.
Gua Sha is intended to address stagnant energy, called qi, in the body that is seen to be responsible for inflammation. Inflammation is the underlying cause of several conditions associated with chronic pain. Rubbing the skin’s surface is thought to help break up this energy, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. The redness that arises on the skin is called Sha and is a good response for healing.
Gua sha is beneficial for many acute and chronic health problems including:
Headaches
colds and flu
fever
injury
joint pain
fibromyalgia
heat exhaustion
Note: Gua Sha marks can last a few days
